Bay City was a village then and had a few hundred people. The growing lumber industry and buildings were springing up very quickly. The Winkler's built their home on the corner of 4th and Jackson Street and lived in their home for almost 50 years.
Just a short way up from 4th street, were a number of Indians who had established a camp.
All families (Winkler, Lutzke, Burkhardt and Laetz) attended the Bethel German Lutheran Church, which used to sit at the corner of Madison and McKinley.
Caroline and Michael had 6 children: Maria Caroline, Christina, John, George, Elizabeth and Charles.
After the death of her husband, in 1890, Caroline took a trip back to her homeland to visit relatives. She went with her nephew J. George Laetz and his wife. She boarded the Steamship Trave from Hoboken, NJ (or NY) enroute to Bremen.
Other families also sailed on the Steamship to Ortenburg, Germany, they were: Mr. and Mrs. Johann George Laetz (Caroline's nephew), Mrs. Andrew Eymer and her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Arnold and other families.
The family and their home has been gone for many years, but her memory, along with all of the family will always live on.
Caroline is buried with her beloved husband, her son George Winkler and grandson William.
Her sister Maria Steininger Laetz can be located at this memorial 88941615. The Laetz family is also buried at Green Ridge.
Her daughter Christina can be located with her husband at this memorial: 76984280
Her son John is buried with the Lutzke family (and his wife Tillie).
