"CHARLES GEMBERLING (also Gamperling, Gamperlane, Kemberling, Gemperling. etc.) was born in Germany and had a brother Paul and one Jacob. Paul and he embarked for America at Rotterdam, Holland on the English ship Neptune commanded by Captain Waire and landed at the port of Philadelphia, where they took the oath of allegiance to the British Government on September 30, 1754 prior to the Revolution. Charles (or Carl as he was sometimes called) and Paul were land owners in what is now Penn Township of Snyder County. In 1781. Clary Campbell was a tenant on Charles Gemberling's land, and Charles seems to have moved elsewhere. In 1790, Charles lived in Buffalo Township in what is now Union County, and his family consisted of one male over and three under 16. eight females and two other free persons. Charles once lived in Philadelphia. He died in Harrisburg in 1814 and is buried there. At one time he owned the land on which the village of Salem now stands. For some reason he changed his name to Chamberlin or Chamberling. He was a large land-owner in Penn Tw'p. and owned a home in Selinsgrove. His children were: John, Catherine, (Mrs. John Capp), Mary (Mrs. Conrad Row), Susan (Mrs. Geo. Slotterback), Sarah (Mrs. John Capp). Esther (Mrs. Peter Withington). Anna (Mrs. Christian Glass). Margaret (Mrs. Geo. (Elliman), Charles, Frances (Mrs. Jacob Albright), and Lydia (Mrs. Fred Kelker)."
