John was born in Lisburn, County Down, Ireland to Robert and Maria McLean. The family migrated to Canada when he was two years old. His first wife was Mary Jane McMillan ... they had one son before her death in 1885. He later married Ruth Ransome on November 16, 1886 in Keppel Township, Ontario and they had nine children. He was a farmer and other than a few years spent in Michigan, US he farmed mostly in the Grey County area of Ontario. After the death of his wife Ruth in 1907 he moved out west near Watrous, Saskatchwan where he farmed until the loss of his eyesight due to cateracts. He returned to Ontario where he spent the rest of his life.

Note: re his son Thomas Howard
Thomas changed his name sometime in the 1920's and lived the rest of his life as John Alexander Campell.
