John was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Rex William Thomas, Sr. and Nova Rose O'Brien Thomas. He was a member of the Class of '74 at Huntsville High School. He was a Huntsville Eagles football player.

He married Marlene Ann Evans of Pettigrew, Arkansas on 12 February 1978. Marlene had 3 children from a previous marriage: Gary, Cathy, and Greg Johnson. John and Marlene had 2 children: 1) Tessa Nicole Thomas, born 26 November 1978 in Huntsville [Married Vern Peterson, resides in Bayfield, Colorado]; and 2) John Patrick Thomas, born 21 May 1980 in Siloam Springs [Married Bonnie, resides in Cortez, Colorado].

John was a technical director for Fayetteville Open Channel Public Access Television a number of years. He later founded O'Brien Video in Cortez, Colorado.

Marlene died in Tulsa, Oklahoma in September 1972 from car wreck injuries and is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, south of Pettigrew.
John died on 7 January 2005 from liver failure. He was cremated, and his ashes are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery with Marlene.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
