His parents, Vincenzo and Angelina, were from Italy but Onofrio was born in Chicago and worked for the city's sewer department before he was drafted during World War I. Onofrio died at Camp Logan in Houston, Texas in January 1919 from the Spanish Flu pandemic that had spread to this U.S. Army post.
