Peter Saylor and Barbara Schoenfeld were married in 1774 in Frederick County, MD. The family spelling has also recorded been recorded Sailor, Sayler, Seiler, Seylor, and Syler. Mathias Saylor, Peter's father, named his wife in his will as "Magdelena Harry" and named three daughters whose husbands were named Harry. There is a German two-syllable surname Harried, and it seems more likely that Harry would be a derivative of that than of Herr, which is only one syllable.

Peter Seyler appears in the 10 August 1774 list of members of the Reformed Congregation of Hagerstown. In 1779 and 1782, he was a deacon of that church.

He appears in the 1776 census of Elizabeth Hundred as Peter Sailor, age 23. Also listed is his wife, Barbara Sailor, age 21.[2]

At least five children of Peter were baptized in the RCH, where his wife's name is given as Barbara.

Peter Sailor died at his home in Hagerstown on 20 February 1836 "after a lingering illness, at an advanced age ... one of the oldest inhabitants of Washington County."[4] His will, written on 8 April 1834, provides as follows :

"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Peter Sailer of Washington County in the State of Maryland, being in perfect health of body but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding Considering the uncertainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous of settling my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say,
"First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereinafter named and after my debts and funeral charges are paid I devise and bequeath as follows.
"It is my wish and desire that my Executors hereinafter named shall as soon as convenient dispose of the Tract of Land I own in Fairfield County, State of Ohio, containing Four Hundred and Eighty Acres, also dispose of all my personal effects and collect all monies due and standing out.
"I give and devise unto Peter Sailer my only son my Plantation whereon I now dwell containing about Four hundred Acres to him the said Peter Sailer and his heirs and assigns in fee simple on the following terms, that is to say the Plantation is to be surveyed and the said Peter Sailer to be charged Forty dollars per acre for the same which amount without Interest he the said Peter Sailer shall well and truely pay to my Executors hereinafter named as follows the sum of six hundred Dollars earnest money each and every year untill the whole Amount is paid. The first payment to be made one year after my decease. I also give and bequeath unto my said son Peter Sailer an equal distribution share.
"I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Susannah, Widow of Henry Shanefelt deceased one share or mority of the proceeds of the sale of the Ohio Land, the proceeds of the sale of my personal effects, the monies outstanding and due to me, the money I may have on hand, and of the amount due or may be due by my Son Peter Sailer on the plantation devised to him.
"I give and bequeath unto my Grand children, heirs of my daughter Elizabeth deceased former wife of Andrew Shanefelt Deceased, namely to the heirs of Polly Shanefelt deceased daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Shanefelt, Henry Shanefelt, Andrew Shanefelt, Daniel Shanefelt, Jacob Shanefelt, David Shanefelt, and Susannah Shanefelt, one share or mority to be equally distributed among my said Grand children. The heirs of said Polly Shanefelt to have one share of the proceeds named in Susannah Shanefelt's bequest. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Catharine Sailer one share or mority of the proceeds named in Susannah Shanefelt's bequest.
"I give and bequeath unto my daughter Magdalene, wife of Daniel Middlekauff, one share or mority of the proceeds named in Susannah Shanefelt's bequest.
"I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah wife of John Wolfelsbarger one share or mority of the proceeds named in Susannah Sailer's bequest.
"I give and bequeath unto my daughter Nancy Sailer one share or mority of the proceeds named in Susannah Sailer's bequest.
"I give and bequeath unto my Grand daughter Elizabeth Holly daughter of David Middlekauff, one hundred dollars.
"Whereas David Middlekauff hath highly offended and disobliged me and by his conduct in life hath rendered himself unworthy to be called or taken notice of as a son in law, I do therefore give and bequeath unto Hannah his wife the sum of five dollars.
"In order to be more explicitly understood I will repeat that it is my will and desire that my Daughters Susannah Shanefelt, Magdalene Middlekauff, Catharine Sailer, Sarah Wolfelsbarger, Nancy Sailer, and the heirs of Elizabeth Shanefelt deceased shall all inherit share and share alike as also my son Peter Sailer.
"And Lastly I do hereby Constitute and appoint my son Peter Sailer and my Son in Law Daniel Middlekauff to Executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and Confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this eighth Day of April in the Year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and Thirty four."
