Death of Charles Stewart

Charles Stewart, 83, former bee inspector for the New York State Department of Agriculture, died Thursday morning at the Bulson Convalescent Home in Gloversville, where he had been a patient the past year. He was born in Johnstown Jan. 13 1860, son of Robert and Catherine Reid Stewart, and has lived in Johnston all his life.

As a young man he studied the cultivation of bees and made that his life work. He served for 28 years, until his retirement, because of ill health as state bee inspector and gave lectures annually at Cornell University and at Amherst College. He edited several books on bees, and was for some time a radio speaker on the subject.

Mr. Stewart was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown, a member and past master of St. Patrick’s Lodge, F. & A. M., Johnstown Chapter, 78, Royal Arch Masons, Cyprus Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Cayadutta Lodge of Odd Fellows and a former member of Kolaneka Grange.

Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. E.L. Coons, Broadalbin, Mrs. Grace Casey and Miss Florence Stewart, Johnstown; two sons, William Stewart, Gloversville, and Robert Stewart, Canajoharie; grandchildren, great grandchildren and nephews.

The funeral will be here this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Cole funeral home, Johnstown, The Rev. Raymond Ketchledge, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Johnstown Cemetery.
