Verneice, a.k.a. Gunny, was born in Tuckerman, Ark., to parents Thomas and Mary Mitchell. She was united in marriage to Phillip "Bud" Gunn on June 21, 1938. They later moved to California where they raised their three children, Nadine, Sam and Phyllis. Gunny's first love was serving God at Fillmore First Assembly of God in any ministry where she was needed. If not at church, you'd find her out with friends, doing yard work, or making tacos for her family and friends.
Gunny is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Nadine Randall; twin sister, Vernil Scott; sisters, Molly Dunehew and Lucille McCool; brothers, Rudolph Mitchell, Marvin Mitchell and Hubert Mitchell. She is also preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Steel.
She leaves behind her son, Sam Gunn of Santa Paula, and daughter, Phyllis Steel (husband Mike) of Fillmore. Gunny is also survived by her brother, Voss Mitchell (wife Wanda) of Ventura, and sister, Pauline Decker of Porterville, Calif. Gunny's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews are left with wonderful memories that we will forever be grateful for, especially her love for God!
The family of Verneice Gunn would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all the staff at Fillmore Convalescent Center who tirelessly gave their all in caring for our Gunny! You all are the best there is!
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary in Fillmore. Graveside services will be officiated by Pastor James Guinn, assisted by Pastor Jerry Garife, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Bardsdale Cemetery.
