American businessman. Son of Scottish sea captain William Dick Cargill who had emigrated to New York in the late 1830s and Edna Davis, a native of New York. In 1856 his family moved to Janesville, WI where he became a grain trader. He founded the Cargill Company in 1865. After his death, his son-in-law, John MacMillan, Sr., led the company and moved the business to the Minneapolis, MN area, where the corporate headquarters is currently located. He was married to Ellen ("Ella") Theresa Stowell on October 1, 1868. They had four children, William ("Will") Samuel Cargill, Edna Clara Cargill, Emma Cargill (Fred M Hanchette), and Austen Cargill (Anne Ray).
