Elmer Middaugh was born in Caroline Township, Yompkins County, New York on September 30, 1851. He was the son of Richard W. and Angeline Smith Middaugh. He moved with his parents to Wisconsin, and later to Steele County, Minnesota. On October 9, 1872, he married Stella Phillips in Owatonna, the county seat of Steele County. Elmer and Stella had three children and lived their whole lives on Owatonna. Stella died in 1934 and Elmer died on September 6, 1939, in Owatonna. They are both buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna.
