He was was one of 10 students from Charles Selleck School in Norwalk, CT, heading back in from a day of sailing on the river. The paddle-steamer, Americus, owned by William "Boss" Tweed (Tammany Hall), was making its way along the river when it collided with the Selleck craft, capsizing it. Eddie, of Troy, NY, was a strong swimmer and did what he could to help his struggling classmates to safety. While attempting to rescue Charlie Bostwick (FAG: #65462045) of Auburn, NY, the pilot of the Americus restarted the engine. On its first rotation, the paddle struck Eddie in the head, fracturing his skull and nearly severing his arm.
Eddie and Charlie both drowned along with another classmate, Willie Crane (FAG #85694696) of Somers, NY. All three students are memorialized in stained glass windows in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winona, MN.
