Eugene fell victim to typhoid fever and was described by the Winona Republican as "a young man of the most excellent traits of character, and his amiable ways and high sense of honor had endeared him to all his acquaintances." As an indication of medical concerns of the era, the paper continued: "He had been sick only a short time—about eighteen days—and it was not until within two or three days of his death that his physicians became alarmed about him." The funeral was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona and he is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery.
