Louis Belgrade, 58, a mucker at the Spring Hill Mine was instantly killed at 3:45 p.m. on March 11 when a rock dropped on him from a height of about six feet. Belgarde was working at the draw hole of grizzly no. 352 and was loosening ore from the walls and ceiling with an iron bar when the large rock dislodged striking him in the head.

Belgarde's body was taken to the Opp and Conrad Mortuary where Dr. Flinn conducted a post mortem examination. He found death was caused by a fractured skull with a broken neck as a probable contributing cause. He said death was practically instantaneous.

Dr. Flinn pronounced the tragedy an unavoidable accident and announced that an inquest would not be unnecessary.

The Spring Hill Mine, in 1930 the largest gold producer in the state, is operated by the Montana Mines Corporation.

Belgarde is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Belgarde, and 13 children, 11 of whom reside in Helena. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Nick Lorenzo of Deadwood, S.D. The children include Mrs. Clarence Halls of 743 East Park Avenue, Butte; Gus Belgarde of Tekoa, Wash.; and the following of Helena; Victor, John, Robert, Harold, Tom, Rose, Mary, Elizabeth, Helena and Henry.
