Paul was the 16th child of John Leopold and Johanna (Mastel) Holzer. Paul was baptized on December 16, 1934, at the Holy Rosary Church in Trail City.
Paul and Helen Louise Hurd were united in marriage on October, 18, 1969. To this union two sons were born, Douglas Lee and Vernon Walter.
Paul was a resident of South Dakota his entire life, living in Trail City, Sturgis, Lead, Deadwood, and Spearfish. He worked as a farm/ranch hand for a few years before taking a job at Homestake Mine in Lead, where he worked until his retirement.
Paul thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people, eating out, taking pickup rides with his friend to see new sites around the countryside, and always loved to share his stories with friends. He was a very proud grandpa of his five year old granddaughter, Teun Rose, and loved spending time with her. Paul loved his family very much.
Paul is survived by his son, Doug Holzer of Spearfish; granddaughter, Teun Rose Holzer of Spearfish; two brothers, Kasmer (Arlene) Holzer of Mesa, AZ; Willie (Joan) Holzer of Gillette, WY; four sisters, Catherine Holzer of Mobridge, SD, Tillie Kost of Herreid, SD, Ida Holzer of Mobridge, Helen Reiss of Bullhead City, AZ; three sisters-in-law, Isabelle Holzer of Gillette, WY, Frances Holzer of Mobridge, Patty Hurd of Cambridge, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; son, Vernon; five brothers, Frank Holzer, Valentine Holzer, Jake Holzer, John Holzer Jr., Adam Holzer; four sisters, Ann Lehnert, Elizabeth Fritz, Mary Nelson and Judy Wiest.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 5, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish, with Fr. Tim Hoag as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
