He was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Rexburg to Albert Herman Frei and Martha Blende Fife. He graduated from Marsing High School and moved to Idaho Falls to work.
It was in Idaho Falls where he met his sweetheart, Mona Nadine Ricks. They were sealed for time and all eternity April 30, 1952, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions.
Ben enjoyed journaling, gardening, fishing, camping and, most of all, spending time with his family, always making it a priority to go on family vacations. He gave a lifetime of service to his family and church. He was a selfless and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a hardworking and humble man.
His primary employment was working at Challenge Dairy. Additionally, he spent many years as a part-time janitor. He was an avid Scouter, playing a prominent role with a Scout troop for people with special needs, including his youngest son, Aaron. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award for this service. He will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his 12 children: daughters, Judy (Tom) Infanger, Peggy (Dale) Cress, Carol (Ron) Hatch, Kathy (Blaine) Holverson and Ruth DeLand, all of Idaho Falls, and Amy (Randall) Jones of Pleasant Grove, Utah; sons, Ben Wendell (Aurelia) Frei of Provo, Utah, Michael Frei of Sacramento, Calif., Kent (Tanya) Frei of Snowflake, Ariz., John (Diane) Frei of Burlington, N.C., Scott (Jana) Frei of Rochester, Minn., and Aaron Frei of Ammon; sisters, Nola Carlson of Chicago, Ilene (Arval) Wood and Bernice (Sam) Wadsworth of Pocatello; 64 grandchildren and 59-plus great-grandchildren.
Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Mona; his parents; his four brothers, Ted Martin, Harry, Ralph and Tim; and three grandchildren, Stephanie Cress, Christopher DeLand and Kade Frei.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Ammon LDS Stake Center, 2055 S. Ammon Road, with Bishop Ryan Kohler officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls, and from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park in Idaho Falls.
The family would like to express appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at The Gables of Ammon and at Creekside Home Health for the exceptional care and love they offered to Ben in his final years.
