Born in Detroit, Michigan in April of 1865 (newspaper obit says 1867) her parents died when she was a child, and she grew up in the household of an aunt in Toronto, Canada. She took a nursing course there when a young woman. She was married in Detroit and her husband died there.

She came to the Black Hills with two uncles, William and George Cosgrove, who were among the early pioneers of the country. She was united in marriage with William A Seifert and they established their home on a ranch in what is now the Nisland community. Mr. Seifert passed away a number of years ago and Mrs. Seifert and family continued to reside on the farm, until the last few years when Mrs. Seifert has spent much of her time in Sturgis with her daughter, Mrs. Nina McCracken.

May brought her daughter Naina/Nina McCracken to the marriage with William A Seifert, 01 May, 1887. They are listed on the 1900 census of Butte, South Dakota with other Seifert children... This census says that May was mother of nine children, with five living at that time.
William Seifert died on 14 March, 1901, though his cemetery stone says he died in 1891.

May remarried to Elmer McLean about 1903. Their daughter Anna McLean was born, who is shown as a 5 yr. old on the 1910 census, though Mr. McLean is not listed with May and children. May is said to be mother of 10 children, with 6 living. I have no other information about Elmer McLean.
The 1915 state census shows her as widow May McLean.
The 1920 census shows her listed again as May Seifert, with son Charles Seifert as head of household, and also in the household are May's daughters Marion and Anna.

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Seifert, 76 years of age, were held in St. Martin's Chapel, Sturgis, at 11 o'clock Saturday morning. Interment in the neighborhood cemetery, Nisland. Mrs. Seifert passed away in Denver, Wednesday of last week from complications following an attach of flu. She had been at the home of a niece in Denver since Thanksgiving.... Surviving are two sons: Charles Seifert of Nisland; William Seifert of Selma, Calif; two daughters: Mrs. Nina McCracken, Sturgis, and Mrs. Anna Shank, Hot Springs; two nieces, Mrs. Fred Pferdesteller of Denver, and Mrs. N. A. Erickson, of Deadwood.
