Son of John Bray and Susanna Hadley Bray. Some family and printed references refer to Jeremiah as Jere or Jerry. Will use the full name of Jeremiah for this entry.

Married first to Emma Hadley on or about March 4, 1843. Five children: Sarah Jane Bray, Calvin Bray, Martha Ann Bray, Sanford Bray, and Sylvester Bray. Sylvester died as an infant (Feb. 8, 1853 - August or September 20, 1853.

Jeremiah then remarried to Temperance/Tempy Greeson on or about August 29, 1855 in Morgan County, Indiana. Children: Amanda E Bray, Albert Bray, Levi Bray, Julia Bray, Guila Bray, and George Bray. Gulia died as an infant (September 23, 1864 - September 23, 1864) and is buried in the same row as her parents at Howard Grove Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Keep in mind that there are legitimate conflicts of names, dates, and marriage information in various trees developed by many sources. The information should always be treated with some questioning in mind.

Note: In January of 2008 this contributor received unexpected lineage information that a Waters family ancestors' sibling's descendants (got that?) had eventually settled in the Washington County/Jefferson County - Iowa area in the 1870's. Three of these Waters daughters went on to marry three Coffin brothers. This discovery was of curious interest to this contributor who has lived in this same area since 1973 and had no idea of this lineage connection. In researching the Coffin family, this contributor discovered that Henry Coffin (father of the three siblings) was a sibling of Jeremiah Coffin who married Martha Ann Bray (daughter of Jeremiah Bray). Using family history information available at the Fairfield Public Library and online family tree sources, this contributor has gone on to search out and identify many of these resulting Bray/Coffin lineage descendants.

Jere BRAY is Dead.

Jeremiah BRAY, whose serious illness was noted in "The Ledger" some time ago, died at his home in Blackhawk township, ten miles north of this city Wednesday (sic - January 24th). He had been ill for some time with an affection of the stomach and kidneys and his death was not unexpected. Mr. BRAY was born in Chatham county, North Carolina, August 8th, 1821. Eleven years later the family removed to Morgan county, Ind., where Mr. BRAY grew to manhood. He was married here in 1848 to Miss Emma HADLEY. In 1848 the young people came to this county and located on the farm on which they resided continuously until death. Mrs. BRAY passed away in August, 1856. A year later Mr. BRAY was married to Miss Tempy GREESON, who died in 1891. Five children were born of the first marriage, four of whom are now living -- Mrs. S. J. FITCH of Taylor county; Calvin BRAY of Westchester, Washington county; Mrs. Martha COFFIN and Sanford BRAY of this county. Of six children born of the second marriage five are yet living, all in this county -- Mrs. Amanda TRAIL, Mrs. Julia RICE, Albert, Levi and George. During his residence of nearly half a century in Jefferson county Mr. BRAY had formed many warm and lasting friendships, and his death will be very generally regretted. He had been a member of the Baptist church for more than fifty years, and he had closely followed its teachings in spirit as well as in letter. He had a reputation for honesty and integrity, for truth and veracity which no one could question. Funeral services were held in the Howard Grove church and the remains were interred in the cemetery near by. Rev. H. Shallenbarger conducted the funeral exercises.
