The best known "portrait" of Aristophanes, a Roman era bust at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. That's the playwright's name (in Greek) on the pedestal, but the likeness is doubtful. According to references in his comedies and a taunt by his rival Eupolis, he was prematurely bald.

In a chorus from "Peace" (421 BC), Aristophanes explained why the audience of the City Dionysia should award his play first prize: "I pained folk but little and caused them much amusement; my conscience rebuked me for nothing. Hence both grown men and youths should be on my side and I likewise invite the bald to give me their votes; for, if I triumph, everyone will say, both at table and at festivals, "Carry this to the bald man, give these cakes to the bald one, do not grudge the poet whose talent shines as bright as his own bare skull the share he deserves". (Incidentally, Eupolis took the prize that year. "Peace" came in second).

The contemporary relevance of Aristophanes was demonstrated with the grassroots "Lysistrata Project". On March 3, 2003, over 1000 performances and readings of "Lysistrata" were held in 59 countries around the world to protest the imminent Iraq War.

The author might have scratched his head at this pacifist use of his work. In other plays he points with pride to Athens' past military triumphs, and his objection to war was that of the average citizen, its disruption of everday life. At least that's how he presented it.

As for feminism, the concept didn't exist. Ancient Athenian democracy was for men only. Women had no social or political power, and the original audience for "Lysistrata" would have seen the heroine as a character of pure satirical fantasy. The overriding joke of this play is that the situation in Athens was so bad even women could attain positions of authority. Yet Aristophanes used these patriarchal assumptions to sneak in some painful truths and a glimpse of real empathy for the opposite sex. Lysistrata is also rare among his protagonists in not being motivated by self-interest. Aristophanes' irreverent gaze at all sides of an issue gives his comedies an ambiguity that leaves them ripe for different interpretations.
