John Fickel married Rachel Barnett in 1829, Perry County, Ohio. They remained in Perry County, Ohio until 1851 when they moved to Putnam County, Ohio.

John, along with his son Eli, were elected two of the first three trustees in Monroe Township, Putnam County, Ohio on 5 Apr 1852.

He remained in Putnam County until his death in Dec 1880. His wife Rachel was not enumerated with him in 1870 and 1880. She was living with her children in Mills County, Iowa.

John is buried in Mt Zion Cemetery, along with Joshua's first wife Sarah Burgh Fickel, Eli's first wife Catherine Madden Fickel and their infant son John.

His wife Rachel died in 1892 at the age of 95 in Mills County, Iowa. Where she is buried however seems to be a mystery. Mt Zion Cemetery was in shambles, and volunteers have done a great job of cleaning it up and finding as many stones as possible. The Malvern Cemetery in Mills County Iowa has fairly complete records, and she has not been located there. At this time we believe she was returned to Mt Zion Cemetery.
