David Wayne Powers dies April 27, 1945

In the passing of Wayne Powers, Webster Co and Central WV have lost an outstanding valued citizen whose worth increased years by and whose friends are legion.

Wayne Powers after a long illness during which he fought courageously nd without complaint, passed away on Friday April 27th, 1945 at the age of 67 years. Surviving him is a large family, all of whom have inherited their father's sterling qualities.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Nora Powers, and twelve children: Glen, Roy, and Russell (these sons are serving their country in the United States Navy, and Ova V. Powers, the fourth son, makes his home in California. Eight daughters are Mrs. Herbert Engle, Mrs. Philip McCutcheon, Mrs. Crit Hall, Mrs. George M. Allen, Mrs. Dewey Robinson, Mrs. Grover Nusum, Mrs. Charles Costilow, and Miss Norma Powers. He leaves six brothers: Reverend Charles A. Powers, James Powers, Henry Powers, George Powers, Thomas Powers, and Brooks Powers.

His funeral was held at Webster Springs on Sunday May 6, 1945 in the chapel of Dodd and Hurt Funeral Home, and the crowd was so large that many were turned away. The services were conducted at the special request of the deceased, by his brother, Rev. Charles Powers, Pastor of the Methodist Church of Pennsboro, WV, who paid feeling and just tribute to the character, virtues and high standing of his brother. The pastor was assisted by Rev. Underwood of the Baptist Church of Webster Springs.

Wayne Powers was honored for many years by his fellow citizens. For eight years he served as
deputy sheriff of Webster County, an office he conducted with unfailing energy and marked success. For six years he was commissioner of the county court of Webster Co, and in this difficult place he attained and merited universal approval.

At the time of his death, he was Supt. of Holly River State Park which office he had held for
nearly four years and he was chosen for this work over many applicants of high standing. In all
public services he made good and earned the reputation of a faithful, fearless public servant.

Blessed with energy and integrity of purpose to a high degree, he made friends everywhere. Loyalty and willingness to help day and night brought the expression from all people who knew him, that the night was never too dark nor the way too long for Wayne Powers to help those in need. No higher compliment can be given any man. He will be sorely missed not only in the locality where he made his home for so many years, but all over Central WV, there is the certain knowledge that this man now gone to his reward, has left an imperishable monument of good deeds and valuable, effective service, in the hearts of his fellows.
