"Mr. Pollard Birckhead, one of the last of the old merchants who made Philadelphia famous the world over fifty years ago, died yesterday at his late residence, Twenty-fourth street and St. Alban's place, aged ninety-one years. Mr. Birckhead was born at Bamberry, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, on the 18th of May, 1790, where his parents were also born. A brother of his father was Solomon Birckhead, who, early in the present century was a physician of Baltimore, and one of the most prominent medical men in the country. Early in life deceased left his home and came to this city, and soon after entered the auction business, the firm being Passmore & Birckhead. He was married on the 9th of February, 1816, to Miss Ella Kintzing, whose father was a member of the well-known shipping firm of Pratt & Kintzing. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Birckhead went to Port-au-Prince, where he entered actively into business. He then traveled considerably, and for a number of years resided at Rio Janeiro, Brazil, being then the head of the firm Birckhead & Co., shipping merchants. After an active life in this business Mr. Birckhead returned to this city, and soon after became treasurer of the Philadelphia Fire and Life Insurance Company, and served uin that capacity for twenty years, when that institution went out of existence. Deceased who was then eighty years of age, retired from business, and since that time lived on the means he acquired during a long, active and honorable life. Mr. Birckhead was a member of the Protestsnt Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles, and took an active interest in all which tenderred to the welfare of mankind. Having led a correct life he was a well-preserved man, and few would have thought he had reached his advanced age. His health was always good, and death was really caused by old age and a breaking up of the system. Deceased leaves a widow and four children - a son and three daughters."
