Born into a military family, Edouard attended the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr. Upon graduation, he entered the infantry , serving two years in Germany before being posted in Morocco, where he took part in the Rif Campaign. After being wounded in 1926, he was commanded several different units in French Africa and eventually serving as the Deputy Director of Native Affairs in Rabat.

In 1942, he helped the French patriots in Algiers to prepare for the Allied landings - Operation Torch. Captured and released shortly after, he served on General Giraud's general staff before getting command of a unit. In April and May of 1943, he led his unit through Tunisia and other spots, capturing important war material and over hundreds of prisoners and large equipment.

Promoted to Battalion Chief, Meric distinguished himself during the liberation of Corsica, leading some of the fiercest fighting October 1943. He also took an active part in the liberation of Elba (June 1944) and the landings in Provence (August 1944).

He took part in the fighting at Marseille, Alsace, and the Black Foresst. He was wounded again in Oct 1944. In March of 1945 he took over command of the 1st Moroccan Rifle Regiment. Following the end of WWII, he was stationed for a time in Indochina, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and finally in Baden-Baden as Deputy Commander of French Forces in Germany. Here he retired in 1959. After his retirement he still worked with North Africa, helping form police units and writing for newspapers.

He died in Paris and the funeral service was at the Chapelle du Val-de-Grâce.
