College and Professional Basketball Coach. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, he began his lengthy coaching career as an assistant and experienced his first head coach position with Rider University (New Jersey) from 1965 to 1966. He returned to his alma mater of Penn and served as the Quakers' head coach from 1966 to 1971, guiding them to two Regular Season Conference Championships (1970 and 1971). He led Penn to a 28 win 1 loss record during the 1970-1971 season resulting in a defeat to their Big-Five rivals the Villanova Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament. In 1971, he took over a struggling University of Oregon program and directed the Ducks' teams referred to as the "Kamikaze Kids" for their ability to battle opposing teams defensively to three consecutive National Invitation Tournament berths (NIT) from 1975 to 1977. With this success, he earned Pac-8 Coach of the Year honors in 1977. He moved onto Penn State as head coach of the Nittany Lions and guided them for five seasons (1978 to 1983). He went onto create an impressive resume of assistant coaching roles in the NBA, under Hall of Fame coaches Chuck Daly with the Detroit Pistons (1983 to 1986) and Jack Ramsay with the Indiana Pacers (1986 to 1988). He served as the first head coach in Charlotte Hornets' franchise history from 1988 to 1990. He continued his assistant stints, under Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley with the New York Knicks (1991 to 1994), P.J. Carlesimo with the Portland Trail Blazers (1994 to 1997), Larry Bird with the Indiana Pacers (1997 to 2000, whom he was a member of the staff which coached Indiana to the 2000 NBA Finals) and Jim O'Brien with the Boston Celtics (2001 to 2004) and Philadelphia 76ers from 2004 to 2005. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Big-Five Hall of Fame in 1993 and the University of Oregon Hall of Fame in 2001.
