He was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted as a Private in Company A, 38th Virginia Regiment "Whitmell Guards" in March 1862.
He soon became ill with rubella, bronchitis and typhoid fever and died in the CSA Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond, VA on May 9, 1862. See attached picture of hospital.
Two of his brother in laws David Waller Mitchell and Henry Coleman Mitchell were also Confederate soldiers.
