The day before Zeral's fourth birthday, the children's mother, Ada, passed away. This was presumably from complications following the birth of their new baby brother, Kenneth, six days prior.
It would also seem likely that Arthur was unable to care for a newborn and run his farm, because baby Kenneth was adopted out to Arthur's sister, Mary, who lived in Thornton, Illinois; 130 miles away. The 1900 Census shows that Arthur had taken on a housekeeper, Lenna Lewis, to run the household and care for the other four children. In March of 1903, when Zeral was nearly 12, Arthur married Lenna, but since she had been with them for a number of years, it was probably not a huge adjustment for the children.
Three months before Zeral's 18th birthday, she passed away from an exophthalmic goiter, or Grave's Disease as it is called today. Sadly, a mere three years later, a treatment for Grave's Disease was proven and sufferers no longer had to die from the disease.
