Charles Swing was born in Fairfield Township. He was the first of ten children born to Reverand Michael Swing and his first wife, Sarah Murphy. His education at the village school was very limited but he loved to read and would take books out to the fields with him when he went to work.

He began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Ewing of Greenwich, Cumberland County, New Jersey in 1812. He was a diligent student, making amends for the deficiency of his early education. He graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1815 and practiced about one year with Dr. Ewing. He then moved to Salem, New Jersey and associated himself with Dr. Benjamin Archer for two years, he then settled in Lower Penn's Neck Township, Salem County. Sometime in 1824 he moved to Sharpstown, Salem County, where he continued to practice his profession until his death.

He married Mary Lambson in Cumberland County, New Jersey on January 29, 1817. She died in 1824. They were the parents of Matthias L., Sallie C., and Mary F. Swing. He then married Hannah H Acton on June 1, 1825 in Salem County, New Jersey. They were the parents of Hannah A., Charles P., Harriett, Margaretta A., Abigail S. and John. Their son, John, drowned at Central Ferry, on Snake river, Montana territory on the 31 May 1864. I have not found a burial location at this time.
