Born in Mannington Township, Charles P. Swing was the son of Dr. Charles Swing and Hannah H. Acton. He married Rebecca Abbott Gordon on February 24, 1848 in Salem County, New Jersey. They were the parents of 10 children: Lafayette W., Mary Emma, Caroline W., Charles G., Clarissa, Annabell, Edmund G., George W., Lorena and Hannah.
