Bolling was the maiden name of his paternal great-grandmother, Hannah Bolling Clements. The family story is that she was the daughter of John Bolling, who was a descendent of Pocahontas, but his will does not mention her along with his other children. However, Bolling's father was convinced of it, and since she was his grandmother, he should know so the family tends to give credence to the story.
