Florence’s maternal grandparents were Peter and Mary Fallon married May 17, 1858, in Alloa, Scotland; and her paternal grandparents were Richard and Jane Horsnall Wall married November 16, 1858, in Stoke upon Trent, England.
In 1900, at 16 years of age, and living at 22 Pottery Street, Greenock, Scotland; Florence followed in her father’s pottery footsteps working as a pottery painter.
On July 6, 1910, at 25 years of age, Florence Wall married Robert Gourlay III, 26, also of Greenock. The couple was married in Greenock, Scotland where they eventually settled at 20 Pottery Street. At the time of their marriage, Robert was a marine engineer and Florence was a shop assistant.
In July of 1911, Robert and Florence had a son named Robert Stewart Gourlay IV who lived only hours. The following year, the couple had a daughter Catherine Wall Gourlay born on July 2, 1912; and on June 14, 1914, the couple had a second daughter, Agnes Grieve Gourlay.
From at least 1913 through the fall of 1919, Florence’s husband Robert served as a marine engineer presumably with the Royal Mail Steam Ship Packet Company. One of the company’s principal routes was from Great Britain to Chile and the Canal Zone to which Robert was assigned. Florence and her daughters remained in Greenock.
Some time in or before 1919, Robert’s father [Robert Jr.] suffered a stroke in the United States and needed care; Robert III left the steamship company and moved his family from Scotland to the United States: Robert, Florence, Catherine and Agnes sailed on the Orduna arriving in NY, NY in October 1919.
The family eventually settled in Washington, DC, where a third daughter, Margaret Brember Gourlay, was born March 7, 1924. Robert was employed by the Fussell Ice Cream Company as a mechanical engineer and Florence was a homemaker.
On September 8, 1926 Florence became Naturalized U.S. Citizen. She was a member of The Daughters of Scotia, an organization committed to Scottish heritage.
In 1949, Robert and his wife Florence purchased a home in Kensington, MD. Sadly, Florence died before the house was complete. Florence Wall Gourlay died November 23, 1949.
Florence is remembered for her love of family and baseball, always listening to radio broadcasts and rooting for her home team the Washington Senators.
Florence was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her husband and three daughters, Florence left four grandchildren: Meade Close Fairall, Jr., Stewart William Fairall, James Richard Fairall, and Margaret Cathleen Fairall. Two other grandchildren were born after Florence’s death: Robert Charles Volz and Maureen Lynne Volz.
