DR. STEVEN ABASHIAN of Kingston, N.C. Age 76, of Kingston, N.C. died on July 25, 2001 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., and received his MA and PhD degrees from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. His career was spent as a research chemist. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Joan H. Abashian; one daughter, Tammi, Durham, N.C.; three sons, Greg, Chapel Hill, N.C., Mark and his wife Marianna and children Mara, Sevan and Anya, Oakton, VA. and David and his wife Sandra and children Michael, Nicholas and Caroline, of Cary, N.C. Also surviving are four sisters, Sarah Markarian, LaJolla, Calif., Laura Soghoian, Charlottesville, VA., Rose Blackburn, Doylestown, PA., Violet Breckenridge, San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Dr. Alec Abashian, Blacksburg, VA. and Peter Abashian, Jupiter, Fla. A memorial service was held at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. on July 28, 2001. Burial will be in the South Palms Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to University Hospice, 504B Dexter St., Greenville, N.C. 27834.
