Harold Dean Akin was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois to Granvil Akin and Gladys A. (Holiday) Alkin.
He graduated from Murphysboro High School and attended Shurtleff College in Alton, where he met Julia Davis. They were married Oct. 18, 1943, in Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He was also a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Harold worked many years in business with his father at Akin Auto Service and he retired from Consolidated Coal Company.
He also attended the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and served as pastor in many area churches.
He was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale.
Harold lived to the age of 84 years and passed away on May 1, 2008, at his residence in Carbondale, Illinois.
A memorial service was held May 4, 2008, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Jackson officiating. Burial followed at Murdale Gardens of Memory.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia, on Oct. 12, 2000, and his parents. He was survived by three sons and daughters-in-law of Carbondale and St. Louis; three daughters and sons-in-law of De Queen, Ark., Crystal Lake, and Perryville, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
