Stephen Elliott 15 Nov 1804-13 Mar 1866 is the son of William Elliott and Phoebe Waight. He married Ann Hutson Habersham in 1830, and they had six children. He graduated from Harvard in 1824, was a planter for a while, then studied for the ministry, being ordained an Episcopal priest in 1836. He was rector of St peter's in Charleston, of Prince William's and St Bartholomew's parishes. He devoted himself to missionary work among the Negroes and built a church for them on the Combahee River called Christ Chapel. He established a large integrated Sunday School.
