Middleton Stuart Elliott, born May 10, 1841, graduated from the Citadel in June 1862. After the war he returned to Beaufort and went to work for Henry M. Stuart in the cotton gin. He was appointed deputy collector of customs in Beaufort in 1886. He married July 9, 1867 Anne Stuart Rhett, daughter of Edmund Rhett and Mary Williamson Stuart. She inherited the famous Secession House in Beaufort which became their home. She died February 21, 1918, and Middleton on April 21, 1921 in Charleston and both are buried at St. Helena's.
They had six children: Phoebe Waite (sic) (Mrs. Robert Lee Randolph); Edmund Rhett; Admiral Middleton Stuart. U.S.N. (1872-1952); Stuart Rhett (1874-1946, manager of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company in Ishpeming, Michigan); Mary Williamson (1878 1936) who married Col. Nathaniel B. Barnwell; John Habersham Elliott (1881-1934).
