Gerald William "Bill" Barnett, 87, Stanton area of Brookville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at McKinley Health Center, Brookville.
Born May 12, 1924, in New Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Merle Blair and Blanche Laura Cathcart Barnett. On Sept. 16, 1949, he married the former Bertha "Jean" Kennedy. She survives. They enjoyed 62 years of good marriage.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the 104th Infantry Division. Bill worked as a truck driver at Reed Milling for over 37 years, delivering feed to many area farmers.
He was a member of the Stanton United Methodist Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Brookville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 204, of which he held various offices.
He enjoyed woodworking, building bird houses, apple and potato crates. He also enjoyed the bus trips with the Brookville senior citizens. He and his wife drove themselves out west and took many other trips together.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Ray Barnett of Brookville and Thomas Eugene Barnett and wife, Carrie of Meadville; two grandchildren, Ashley Nicole and Courtney Marie Barnett; and one sister, Lois Carrier of Brookville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Lloyd, Dale, Paul, Roy, and Clyde Barnett; and one sister, Elmo Arthurs.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Brookville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Roger Howard. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Brookville American Legion Post No. 102 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 204. Burial will follow at St. John's Windy Hill Cemetery.
