Harold was a miner, working at New Moss Colliery in Audenshaw and he enlisted into the army relatively early in the War. In November 1915, he was wounded and was evacuated home suffering also from shellshock. Prior to his death, he had been a patient at the Alexandra Hospital in Stockport but had then been moved to another hospital in Rusholme. His death is understood to have been due to natural causes and unconnected with his wounds. His funeral was on 2 November at Willow Grove.
After the War, Annie moved to 475 Stockport Road, Denton and must have arranged for his commemoration on the local Memorial. Reporting his death, the Stockport newspapers had written his name as Neale and this is probably the source of the wrong spelling on then Memorial at the town's art gallery.
