Inez Ruth Tongen was born September 15, 1894, to Peter and Anna (Stevens) Isaacs of Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Church by Rev. Oppedahl.

On December 23, 1916, she was united in marriage to Jim Tongen of Hazel Run. To this union five sons were born, namely, Lucius of Clarkfield, Minnesota, Jerold, who was killed on Negro's Island in World War II, Harlan of Hopkins, Minnesota, Willard of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Omar of Boyd, Minnesota.

The family farmed in the Hazel Run, Montevideo and Milan areas. After the death of her husband in 1964, she lived in Clarkfield a number of years and then moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo. After a few months, her health began to fail and she moved to the Clarkfield Care Center.
