John Woodrow Hays joined the United States Navy at the age of 21 and served until the end of the war. John served on the USS Prairie Bird stationed on the Mississippi River.

He was an early settler of Pottawatomie County, Kansas near Cedar Creek, 1866, where he was well known and a successful farmer.
He married Bassima in September 23, 1867. Together they had eight (8) children.

John and Bass lived in Fosteria, Kansas for many years.
