Mary Anderson Burks, 90, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, the 1st day of April, 2012.

Ivalee Marigold Anderson was born on the 3rd day of December, 1921, in Rhineland, Missouri, the youngest child of John William and Oneita Victoria Metzler Anderson.

She moved to Kentucky when she was fourteen years old. Mary Anderson married Joseph E. Burks in 1944 in Hodgenville, Kentucky, and was the manager of the Mary Anderson Theater until she and Joe moved to Nashville, Tennessee, when Joe went to work for Deere & Company. While living in Nashville, Mary Anderson became a qualifying judge for the National African Violet Society. An able horticulturist, Mary Anderson developed new strains of African violets and at one time had over 1600 plants of 600 varieties. She created several African Violet clubs in three states. Mary Anderson and Joe also lived in Greenville, Kentucky, finally moving to Shelbyville in 1955, when they purchased a partnership in the Shelby Supply Company, becoming sole owners of the local John Deere dealership.

Mary Anderson became a sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia. In a short time she was named a district manager for the encyclopedia's publisher, Field Enterprises, Inc.

Over the years she was an active leader in numerous clubs, especially the Homemakers, PTA, 4-H, and NJHA. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years at the Centenary United Methodist Church where she was a member for 57 years. Active in the Harriet Poynter Circle, the United Methodist Women and the Friendship Sunday School Class, she also served as an officer and member of various church ministries.

Mary Anderson was famous for her homemade fried chicken brought faithfully to Wednesday night church suppers. She regularly hosted church picnics, Sunday School outings and Easter Egg Hunts at the family farm, Crittenden Hill. Mary Anderson was also active in the Four Seasons Garden Club, Shelby County Community Theatre, Shelby County Homemakers and was founder of the Shelby County African Violet Society.

Mary Anderson loved nature and animals and was known for her ability to nurture and rehabilitate plants, pets, injured wild animals and birds.

She left this world on Palm Sunday, the 68th anniversary of her wedding, to celebrate it with her beloved Joe. Joining Joe in welcoming her arrival were her parents, her six Anderson brothers: Andy, Oddle, Thearon, Beverly, Arlie, and Athel; her sister, Rose Marie (Forney); and a son, John Jay Crittenden Burks. She is survived by her children: Bonnie Burks Gray, and her husband, Whitie, of Shelbyville; Joseph E. Burks, II, and his wife, Dorothy, of Shelbyville; Carl David Burks of Detroit, Michigan; Mark Athel Burks, and his wife, Patty, of Shelbyville; and Paul Morgan Burks, and his wife, Jeane, of Austin, Texas; her eight grandchildren: Loretta Lee Gray Kennedy, and her husband, Patrick, Adriel Solomon Gray, Joseph E.
