John was born on the Hairston's Hamburg Plantation in NC. His birth was recorded as 7 July 1852 in enslaver Peter Wilson Hairston's ledger. He had been a truck farmer, and lived on Rt. 4, East Greensboro at the time of his death. Informant on his death certificate was his sister, Elsie Waugh.

In the 1870s John was sent to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where he became a graduate. One of John's classmate at Lincoln University was William W.
