Francis McKeen Wheeler

After seeing more of the world than she ever thought a girl from Alma, New Mexico was going to see, Francis M. Wheeler decided to go see heaven. We wish she would have stayed with us a little bit longer but, at the age of 88, on October 3, 2011 she left to go catch up with so many family members, friends, and loved ones who have already made the journey.

When she was 19 Francis married John A. Wheeler Jr. on August 29, 1942 after only a three-month courtship and as he was being inducted into the Air force during World War II. They were two people truly in love during a nearly 56-year marriage which included settling in Lubbock to start a farm and feedlot machinery business, raising four children, being founding members of Forrest Heights United Methodist Church where she taught the toddler class for over 20-years, being members of Hillcrest Country Club and the Masonic Lodge and Elks Lodge, traveling, and being an inspiration and a joy to everyone around her. She loved life.

In retirement John and Francis moved to Horizon City, Texas where at the age of 57 she began playing golf, and became a pretty good player. Seven years after John's death in 1998 she moved to Irving, Texas to live with her son, Douglas. Not every elderly parent and adult child can happily share a house for 6 1/2 years, but luckily for both of them it worked.

A graveside funeral was held yesterday for Francis M. Wheeler in the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home.

She is survived by two sons, Steve and his longtime partner Linda Deatherage of Lubbock and Douglas of Irving; sisters-in-law Lucille Tune and Mary Frances Rowlette, both of Lubbock; and numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.
