Our Lady of The Angels School during the worst of the fire.

The fire burned for some time in a back stairwell before it was discovered, and there were delays in calling the fire department and in activating the school's internal fire alarm. Once they arrived on the scene, firefighters had to break down a locked gate that blocked access to the courtyard between the two wings of the school, where children were already starting to jump.

Ironically, the second-floor classrooms closest to the main stairs sustained the highest casualties, but the thick, acrid smoke seen here made the upstairs hallway seem impassable. Students and staff on the ground floor were all evacuated safely.

Though it had passed a recent inspection, the school's fire precautions were completely inadequate, and the over-crowding of classrooms was partially responsible for the large number of deaths and serious injuries.
