Ralph was the son of Washington Hanscom Jewell of Leeds, Maine and Theresa Nancy Walton of Chesterville, Maine. His father went by the name of George W. Jewell for most of his adult life. Ralph was born in Joliet, Illinois. He was the third of six children.

His parents' marriage broke up about 1877, and his father remarried in Joliet in 1878. The 1880 census shows that Ralph and his five siblings were living in Leeds, Maine and were separated from both parents. Ralph and two older sisters were living with area families. Three younger siblings were living at the Leeds poor farm, ages 8, 6 and 2. The youngest had been born there, and the children were there at least two and a half years prior to the census. Of these younger three, the youngest two may have died, as there are no additional records on them. The 1880 census for homeless children specifically used the term "abandoned" in regards to the three who were at the poor farm. That same census year Ralph's mother lived with a widower as his housekeeper, about twelve miles to the north in Livermore, Maine.

The circumstances under which Ralph and his siblings became separated from their parents is unknown. However at least three of the children lived with their father in later years. The 1887 Joliet city directory shows Ralph and an older sister living with their father. Ralph lived with his father most of the following decade, and on occasion worked with his father as a carpenter in a business called "George W. Jewell & Son."

Ralph married Grace M. Kight in 1898. The couple had no known children. She died of tuberculosis in 1910, shortly after they moved to Phoenix, and is buried in Greeley, Colorado with other members of the Kight family.

It is more likely than not that this Ralph Jewell was the same Ralph W. Jewell who married Beulah Wolfinger in Ogden Utah in 1912. Unfortunately the marriage license does not list place of birth or parents names. They had four children (three born in Ogden), and divorced in Ogden less than a decade later.

Ralph subsequently resided in Phoenix where he worked as a garage mechanic and in other blue-collar jobs. The 1930 census listed him as a widower (not divorced). His death record also listed him as a widower (not divorced) and said he had been a resident of Phoenix since 1910.

The date of birth on the grave marker, as well as on his death record, is incorrect.

Note: There is an error in the Leeds, Maine birth records that wrongly says Ralph was born in Leeds and had a different mother. To read more about this, or why Ralph's father changed his name look for the findagrave memorial for Washington Hanscom Jewell, which can be linked to through Theresa's memorial.
