Consort Queen of Spain. Born Mary Ann of Habsburg as archduchess of Austria, she was the second-born daughter of Emperor Ferdinand III and his first wife Maria Anna of Spain. Her marriage to King Philip IV was the continuation of a policy of incremental alliance between the two branches of the Habsburgs. After the death of her husband (1665) she became regent until 1675 due to the minor age and partial disability of the heir to the throne Charles II. During that decade, the care of state affairs continued with many difficulties including an attempted coup (1677) by an illegitimate son of Philip IV. Mariana died of breast cancer at the age of sixty-one.
