Obituary
Morris Agler was born in Van Wert county, Ohio, January 23, 1841 and departed this life at his home on South Michigan Street, Plymouth, Ind., March 20, 1912 at the age of 71 years, one month and 27 days. Morris was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Agler who came to Van Wert County from Stark County, Ohio, in a covered wagon in 1937. They were a family highly esteemed and did their share in making that country, then a forest, into a garden as it now is. Morris grew to manhood on this farm and in those days of the excitement of the Mexican war of 1847 his most devoted mother taught him loyalty for his country, home and parents. These lessons of youth bore abundant fruit in afterlife. The Civil War was declared in 1861, and Morris Agler was among the number of Ohio's noble young men that answered to the first call for three years service and enlisted into A 46th Ohio Infantry, September 10, 1861. He was then in his 27th year. He was in many a hard-fought battle, including Shiloh and Kennesaw Mountain and marched with Sherman from Atlanta to the Sea. It was said of him his face was always towards the firing line. His regiment was in constant action for six weeks. Not a day passed during this time without fighting and repulsing the enemy. He reenlisted and served his country until 1865, the close of the war. He then received an honorable discharge. Soon after the war, Mr. Agler became a member of the G.A.R. and was a most worthy member..... On October 27, 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Sayder of Madison County, Ohio. To this union were born four children, Minnie and Arthur dying in infancy. The surviving children are his son Oliver O. Agler of the firm Pyhan & Agler, dealers in hardwood lumber, Chicago; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd McFarlin of West Township, and one adopted daughter, Mrs. David Grossman also of West Township. This daughter was taken into the home when two years old and the love between them is as great as if they were of the same blood. In 1866 Mr. and Mrs. Agler came to Marshall County and located on a farm near Twin Lakes where the family was raised..... They then moved to Plymouth.
