Age 90, died peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2005. As a young Army private, he came to Ft. Lewis for boot camp in 1942 from Colorado, where he spent his boyhood. Alvin spent 3 years in Guam, New Guinea, Luzon, the Philippines, Australia and finally in Japan as a signal corpsman with 60th Signal Battalion. He said he never wanted to go back to that "rainy, drizzly, wet Washington state" after the war was over. In 1946 while working his way up the ladder with New York Life Insurance in Wyoming, there came the chance to head up a new branch office in Tacoma. So back to Washington he came. There he met his future bride, Alatha. They were married in 1947. She preceded Alvin in death in November of 2003. They had two children. Alvin loved to golf, bowl and read. He was an avid walker right up to March of this year. Alvin headed up numerous committees within the United Methodist Church over the years; most notable being the building of a new lodge at Ocean Park Camp for which he earned the Bishop's award for service. He also went to graduate school to earn a CLU for insurance. Alvin's smile, gentleness and patience will be greatly missed.
