He was born June 1, 1923 in Cooksville, Illinois to Frank and Sarah Reardon Leary. He married Anne C. DeCoste on November 16, 1946 in Chicago. She died on September 2, 2000. He married Hazel Hutson in 2004. She died in 2011. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Veronica Holtzinger.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary (William) Lindsey, a son, Glenn (Lynn) Leary, three grandchildren, Ranie Wilburn, Gene (Jodi) Kelley and Joe (Alisa Bialaski) Kelley, six great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great grandchild.
He was a World War II Army veteran. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and was a forward observer for the 111th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars.
