He was born April 14, 1923, in Virginia, the son of Malum and Stella (Hood) Barnette. Jay served in the United States Army, in Germany, during WWII. After being honorably discharged from the military he returned home and worked as a carpenter.
He is survived by his siblings: Virginia Edwards of Greencastle, Bill Barnette of Texas, Betty Buchanan (Edward) of Cloverdale, Kathy Light of Martinsville and Bob Barnette (Pat) of California.

Graveside services will be at Madison Veterans Cemetery, in Madison, IN Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 2:00pm with military services provided by the American Legion Post 9.
