His obituary in the Niagara Gazette published Feb. 6, 1920 pg 1 col 1 read as follows:
"Lewiston, February 6,- SPECIAL - The funeral of JOHN BUTTERY who died in this village February 3, was held this afternoon at 1 0'clock from the home of his son, Emett Buttery. The deceased was a member of Fort Niagara Lodge No. 716, I.O.O.F and representatives of that organization attended the services. Besides his wife, Martha, Mr. Buttery leaves two sons, Emett and Frank of this village, a brother, Adeline Buttery and a sister Mrs. W.D. McEwen of Niagara Falls, N.Y."

Gravesite Details
John's death certificate came from the Lewiston town clerks office , it states he died of "Chronic Valveular leakage of Heart" and nephritis (which is a kidney disorder). He was 79y 6m and 16days old, born July 17, 1840 and died February 3, 1920.
