Sarah was the seventh and last child of Ira and Sarah (Logan) Andruss. Her father died the year after she was born. Her Mother moved to Passaic from New Windsor soon after Ira's death to live with her son Walter L. Andruss in Passaic. She brought with her four daughters (Sarah, Cordelia, Harriet and Elizabeth) and a son.

Sarah married Christian Zabriskie on 18 Oct 1870. They had two children: Annie and Myra.
