Ira was the seventh and last child of Nehemiah and Phebe (Benham) Andrus. He went to New Windsor around 1810 with his brothers Jared, Dennison and Norman. Ira married Sarah "Sally" Logan daughter of Major Samuel Logan and Abigail Clark Logan. His son William Andruss moved to Passaic, NJ where he became prominent in the grocery business. Following Ira's death, Sally Logan removed to Passaic with her youngest children.
